Moon represents our core emotional needs. Thus our key concerns or best memories in life usually reflect the needs symbolized by our natal Moon. In the seminar Noel Tyl shared pithy phrases to be helpful to each Moon placement, so I’ll quote or paraphrase them below.
Moon in Aries: The need to be confident, to be Number One. Put another way, this is a need to lead and excel (Kathy Rose said there is a need for physical expression with this Moon).
Moon in Taurus: This Moon often suggests a reluctance to change due to a fear of transient insecurity. In working with it, we may need to list and identify old, outworn thought patterns and behaviors we can safely let go.
Moon in Gemini: The need to be articulate, playful and communicative. The sibling may enter the picture as an important influence early on.
Moon in Cancer: “The need for relationship reliability; management of emotions on a secure base.” Hence it’s difficult for this Moon to be alone.
Moon in Leo: The need to be loved and appreciated for dramatic self expression. “The King (Queen) complex.”
Moon in Virgo: The need to be on top of details.
Moon in Libra: Needs relationship dynamic for societal reflection of our ego.
Moon in Scorpio: “Needs a mission, assignment, or a plan of attack.”
Moon in Sagittarius: Needs to have opinions respected; needs audience and credentialization.
Moon in Capricorn: “Needs an army.” Like Alexander the Great. The sense is that of ruling and controlling many people in order to make things happen.
Moon in Aquarius: The need to help people. Noel mentioned that natal Aquarius accentuation is ‘hot’, because our culture is putting a premium on it right now (referring to the strongly humanitarian emphasis of our era.) Helping leads to appreciation from others, which is ultimately what this Moon needs.
Moon in Pisces: “Needs to add practicality to ideals.”
Moon and Its Dispositor
We know that aspects modify or suppress the expression of the Moon. Here we’ll also consider the placement of the Moon’s dispositor (i.e. the ruler of Moon’s sign.) For example, Aries Moon’s confidence and thrust for excellence will be expressed through Mars.
If Mars is retrograde in Cancer, we can expect some complication in the Aries Moon’s need fulfillment process. Depending on aspect and house rulership, we can assess how much and where such tension will most likely manifest. This becomes an important key in interpreting how best to to allow the Moon’s need to be fulfilled.
Similarly, For Gemini or Virgo Moon the communicative or intellectual drive will be expressed through Mercury, and its placement and aspect become important in assessing the Moon’s need fulfillment process.
My Sagittarius Moon is desposited by Jupiter. So the Moon’s need* for audience and credential will be expressed through Jupiter (which rules higher education, philosophy, and wide worldview.) In my natal chart, Jupiter in Taurus is unaspected in the 3rd house of communication.
Jupiter’s Taurus placement is idealistic and practical at the same time. Unaspected (called “peregrine” in Noel Tyl’s methodology) planet tends to have almost unlimited expression within the psyche – in my case I’ve spent too much time in college, as well as studied astrology and spiritual philosophy for a long time. I’m usually obsessed with learning.
Jupiter’s 3rd house placement suggests I definitely need to talk or write about what I learn and think. So all in all, the need of the Sagittarius Moon (i.e. to have my opinions respected) will have a free reign within my psyche, making it very important that I somehow attain audience and credentials (i.e. to learn enough to have something worthwhile to say.) So the continuation of learning becomes an important key in fulfilling my Moon’s need.
The possibility for creative synthesis is enormous with the Moon. We can go further than this by considering which house the Moon’s dispositor is involved in (through tenancy or rulership.)
If you can relate to your Moon sign ruler’s placement, and how it supports or modifies your Moon’s emotional need, please feel free to share through email or comment.
*As an aside, all mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces) have a need to grow and develop mentally or intellectually. In the case of Sagittarius (a Fire sign), the element of self assertion seeking recognition enters the picture, hence the need to show and assert to others what one has learned.
